Based on the rankings, R1 HEIs showed strong performance in several innovation categories, with at least 10 institutions placing in the rankings.
Under Category A: Innovation Targets (โFor Whom to Innovateโ), the region demonstrated strength in Entrepreneurial Culture and Ecosystem, Crisis Management, Ethics and Integrity, and Future-Oriented Responses to Global Uncertainty and Geopolitical Risk.
For Category B: Innovation Means (โHow to Innovateโ), R1 HEIs performed strongly in University Brand and Innovation.
Meanwhile, under Category C: โWhat to Innovate,โ the region posted strong participation in Curricular Innovation for Future-Readiness, AI-Based Teaching and Learning Transformation, and Social Impact through Knowledge Transfer.
However, the rankings also revealed areas where fewer R1 HEIs gained recognition.
These include A1: Student Support and Engagement, B5: Funding for Sustainability, and B7: Cost-Effective Management, where only five HEIs entered the rankings. Only three institutions ranked under C1: Representative Research Project.
According to WURI, the 2026 rankings evaluate universities using the three criteria: innovativeness, implementability, and impact.
The official 2026 WURI rankings were released during the 6th Annual Hanseatic League of Universities Conference in Taiwan on May 6-8, 2026.
